SMBYYC - #5

Welcome to the Social Media Breakfast (#smbyyc). The SMB is a place for social media professionals and beginners alike to discuss effective practices, past experiences and new techniques. This meeting will allow us to nurture social media in our community and enhance our existing social networks. The SMB meetings are free (with the exception of special events and bringing in guest speakers) and monthly. We appreciate anyone and everyone's opinions and encourage friendly discussion.

We are excited to announce the 5th edition of the Social Media Breakfast on April 30, 2010 from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm (doors open at 8:00 am) presentations start at 8:30), networking and discussions start at approximately 10:00 am so bring some business cards and plan on staying for a bit.

This event will be hosted by Jayman Homes and they will also be providing the breakfast. It will take place in the beautiful Jayman Homes Theatre.

Come and join us on April 30th for the opportunity to hear our two fantastic speakers:

Sebastian A. Salazar
is a local film producer/director who was born in Santiago, Chile and moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1987. He studied at the Toronto Film School and completed a diploma in Digital Film and TV Production in 2002. Sebastian’s first student film short "Confessions of a Slurpee Junkie" won "Best Digital Film" at the Academy Film Festival in Toronto.

Sebastian will be presenting his first hand experience on the impact Social Media had during the recent earthquake in Chile. His experience encompasses that from an individual effected personally through family and friends as well as his well-entrenched network of people in Chile through Social Media tools like Twitter and Facebook.

Mike Spear
; Director of Corporate Communications for the non-profit organization Genome Alberta.  Mike has been a contributing or co-author to papers on science communication and the ethical issues that come with social media in genetic testing and electronic health records. Mike is also on the social media advisory board for the Biotechnology Industry Organization in Washington D.C. and a member of Genome Canada’s national bioethics team.  Mike has worked as a Journalist with the CBC for many years and consulted with Olds College including overseeing the development of a digital multimedia studio and creating the Distance Education department’s first web presence. Mike was also a System Operator with CompuServe - one of the pioneers in Social Media.

Mike will be presenting his opinion as well as first hand experience on the massive pendulum shift between traditional media and today’s online media tools; and how new media seems to be sucking the life out of traditional media when there should be plenty of oxygen for both to survive. Also with this shift he will share how he feels Alberta should be doing what it used to do best .. taking risks.

There will also be ample opportunity for you to meet many of Calgary's Social media community and network with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Come and join us for a free cup of coffee and breakfast and join Calgary's rapidly growing social media community.

Look forward to seeing you there!
